Research Group Post : Checking for Music Video

We first decided what genre that we wanted, we all decided on Indie as this is our preferred genre choice. In addition, we all listen to this genre of music which will help us engage with the filming process. To find a song that we wanted to use was extremely difficult as most of them had a music video. We found a song that did not feature a music video by looking on at the album, we chose their least common song and looked onto YouTube to see if they had a music video. Finding a song which was not about love was immensely challenging as Indie usually write about love. We chose not to do a love song as we thought this was to clique and wanted something which would be more demanding.

Research : Band and Record Label

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band who was founded in 2002 in High Green, Sheffield. The band consists of 4 members, Alex Turner (lead vocals/lead guitar), Matt Helders (drums/vocals), Jamie Cook (lead/rhythm guitar) and Nick O'Malley (bass/backing vocals). A former member of the band Andy Nicholson left the band in 2006 after they released their debut album.

The band have released five studio albums which are: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), Favorite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011) and AM (2013). They have also released one live album named At the Apollo (2008). The bands debut album became the fastest selling debut album in British band chart history. In 2003, Rolling Stone had ranked the album in it's 30th greatest debut albums of all time.

Arctic Monkeys has won seven Brit Awards, winning both Best British Group and Best British Album three times and have also been nominated for three Grammy Awards.

The band were announced as one of the first bands to have public attention over the internet, with some suggesting  they'd changed the way in which new band are advertised and marketed.
The bands label is Domino Recording Company, this record label use enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos, this is so the Arctic Monkeys work is legally protected, for example from other artists using their lyrics.
Domino Recording Company, commonly known as Domino, is a British Independent record label which is based in London. The label also have a wing based in Brooklyn, New York that deals with releases in the United States.

We emailed Domino Recording Company to ask for copyright permission on the track 'Old Yellow Bricks' as we are considering using this for our music video. To do this we went on their website http://www.dominorecordco.com/ and contacted them via email.

Research : Goodwin

Performance music video:

This type of music video allows the artist/s to show there fan base and the atmosphere surrounding their performances. An example of a performance music video is Oasis 'Roll With It', this video is entirely on stage performing with shots of the crowd dancing to the music, by doing this, this shows the enjoyment they have and entices the audience. Goodwin's conventions are followed as there are a lot of close ups of the performers which results in a created motif which reoccurs throughout their work.

Narrative music video:

A narrative music video incorporates a story into the visuals and usually helps the audience understand the lyrics. An example of a narrative music video is Katy Perry 'Last Friday Night', this video features 4 minutes of dialogue. The last 2 minutes shows the credits of the cast which shows the narrative side to the music video. This music video is about a girl who isn't as 'pretty' as the others and has a makeover and joins in with a party. Goodwin's conventions are adhered in this video as there is frequent reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

Concept music video:

A concept music video can be about anything. It can be an idea or a belief that can be publicised. In this case the band are making a social comment on terrorism. This concept music video by The Black Eyed Peas 'Where Is The Love' makes comments throughout by questioning 'Where is the love'. Goodwin recommends that the lyrics and the visuals should match so when the lyric 'Where is the love' is sang a question mark appears to enforce the social comment.

Research : Music Video Analysis 7 (P!nk - So What)

A close up of P!nk's arm shows a new tattoo she has to cover up her old one which says 'Tru Luv Carey', this is the name of her husband in real life. This shot suggests the narrative is going to be about hurt. The colour red symbolises anger which supports this. This shot is concept based as this shows how P!nk may behave and her attitude.

Dyer's theory of 'a stars an image' can be applied here, as P!nk rides a lawnmower on a motorway, this isn't something she'd do in real life and was created to gain attention by the audience.

P!nk sings 'lost my husband' and her actual husbands hands are over her eyes, this follows Goodwins conventions as the lyrics and visuals match.

Goodwins conventions of lyrics and visuals having a relationship is followed here again, as when she sings 'I want to start a fight' P!nk will begin a fight with someone.

The names Alecia and Carey are engraved onto the tree, Alecia is P!nk's real name. A close up and pull focus is used here to gain the audiecnes attention to the tree.

Goodwins conventions are adhered here as there are many close ups of pink throughout the music video. In addition, P!nk sings into camera which is a common convention of a music video. Furthermore, direct address is used as this engages with the audience. A high angle shot is used to show how superior P!nk is at this moment in time.

A long shot is used here to show both P!nk and the car next to her. Irony is used here as P!nk is going through a break up and a married couple are next to her. Strauss's binary opposition is challenged as P!nk wears black which connotes to evil, however she does not resemble this.

The newly weds faces are framed by the markings on the window. The marking are pink, this symbolises romance and love.

A long shot is used here to show P!nk's whole body and to show the mass amount of paparazzi. Mulvey's 'male gaze' theory can certainly be applied here as Pink is naked, this gains the attention from a male audience.

Verisimilitude and mise-en-scene are created through the use of props and the setting. The jewellery box and the clothes rail support this as without these the scene wouldn't appear real.

A pun has been used in the headline 'Hart' as she has caused her partner Carey Hart a heart break. Goodwin's conventions of intertextuality is followed as this are real headlines about there relationship.

Performance shots are used in this music video to show P!nk as an artist. The colours used in the background and for the smoke are pink which relate to her stage name.

Here Mulvey's theory can be applied as P!nk is wearing minimal clothing which attracts male attention.

CGI (computer generated imagery) is used here to create the newspaper background. The newspaper headline says 'SO WHAT!' which refers to the song name and can also refer to her attitude, therefore creating a concept.

14 location shots
13 outfits

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • Could consider using framing for my artist
  • Following Goodwin's conventions with visuals and lyrics matching

Research : Music Video Analysis 6 (Twenty One Pilots - Heathens)

An establishing shot shows a very vast desolate area, this may suggest a desolate area. The colours used in this establishing shot are black and grey as this connotes to evil and mystery which foreshadows the events in this music video.

This painted mural symbolizes the prisoners as killers therefore suggesting this music video could be quite sinister. The colours on the mural are very dark and black which represents villainous.

Verisimilitude is created as the prisoner wears orange, this typical for prisoners in America, therefore aiding in the realness of the music video. The background of the music video is very dull and black, this is so the prisoner stands out significantly due to the colour of his uniform. A medium close up is used to show the expression on the prisoners face as well as the security behind him. In addition, this follows Goodwins conventions as series of close ups are used throughout to establish a motif of the band.

Goodwins theory is adhered to as intertextuality is used a significant amount within this music video as this is used for promotional purposes, as this is an upcoming movie called Suicide Squad. There are various shots used showing the movie content, this is therefore like a trailer to the film. The only light used in this shot is above the prisoner (Harlequin) this is to act as a spotlight so attention is always on her.

This music video is heavily performance based as the band want to show them as well as shots from the film Suicide Squad.

Will Smith (Dead Shot) is an actor in the film, by promoting this film the band can attract various audiences as he targets many ages from his previous films. Dead Shot is right of frame to show how empty his cell is. Natural lighting is used to reveal his face, this lighting comes from a window he looks at.

Propps theory is applied here as he suggests characters fit into specific roles to create a narrative. Here the artist is see playing a prisoner when he isn’t in real life, this also links to Dyer’s theory of ‘a star is an image’.

Verisimilitude and mise-en-scene is created through the use of lamps and computer monitors this shows that the prisoners are always being watched, a like real prisons.

Natural lighting is used in this close up shot to light the prisoners face, as this reveals his tattoos which resembles the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). In addition this suggests that he wants to be perceived as frightening. A point of view (POV) is used to how us what he sees in the mirror and to also show the audience his tattoos. Furthermore, a pull focus is used here to draw the viewers attention to his reflection in the mirror. The colour gold connotes magic, this is used as the prisoner himself has powers of creating fire.

A close up of Harlequins expression is used, this is quite seductive as she makes eye contact with the guard, this links with Mulvey's theory of the 'male gaze'. Pull focus is applied here to draw the attention onto her.

A long shot is used to show performance. Artificial lighting is used to highlight the performer and attract the audiences attention there.

Goodwins conventions of music and visuals having a relationship are adhered as in both of these shots the person uses their prop as a gun, The music will mimic the sounding of a gun loading, it will then make the sound of a gun firing, the people do the action of a gun being fired with their prop. This links to the narrative as the people are in prison for a crime, which is related to the use of guns. Furthermore, this links to the use of guns from the shots for Suicide Squad.

This long shot is used to show the mass amount of prisoners surrounding the band. The drummer is dressed in black which has a connotation of evil, however Stauss's binary opposition is opposed as he is not the evil one, the prisoners are.

A series of shots which show action and fighting in the film is used in the clip to show how violent the prisoners can be. Furthermore, this gives the audiences a look into the film and what it features.

Strauss's binary opposition can be applied here as Harlequin wears white, this has connotations of innocence and goodness which she clearly opposes as she is in prison for a crime.

The use of guards in the music video creates mise-en-scene and verisimilitude as this creates a sense of realness within the video.

The proxemics here represent the difference in authority as the guards are higher up,showing how they are more superior than the prisoner who is sat on the floor.

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • Consider the colour my artist is dressed in for Strauss's binary opposition
  • Think about when and where to use pull focus to attract the audiences attention

Planning : Target Audience Profiling

Rhea Green's Slidely by Slidely Slideshow

When creating the music video we will take into consideration our surroundings as this will have a huge impact on our audience. As we live in a rural area we would have to travel far to film urban scenes, this could be a problem as we may not be able to get to places. Furthermore, we only have a few ethnicities in our area, this therefore effects the ethnicities this will appeal to, as the music video will mainly feature white people.

We will target 16 to 25 year olds as they use a significant amount of social media, therefore this can be a way to promote an artist as well as promoting themselves. We decided to target both genders because this increases the audiences size, we will do this by using both genders in the music video. Our music video will target aspirers for example aspiring singers, as our new artist was once one of them, therefore the aspirers can personal identify to the artist. The video can use diversion as this will target adolescents and young adults and help them to escape from reality and also be used to entertain them.

Target Audience Demographics (Blumler and Katz)

  • 16 - 25 years of age - younger artists which appeal to this age group
  • Male and Female - both genders will appear
  • Lower/Middle class - appeals to them, no upper class suggestions
  • White - we don't have many ethnicities in our area
  • Aspirers
  • 'Tribe Wired' - people that have access to technology or social media
  • 'Fun/Atics'
  • Diversion - escaping from reality

Target Audience (Denis McQuail)

  • Integration and social interaction
  • Entertainment
  • Personal Identity

Research : Music Video Analysis 4 - (Taylor Swift - Love Story)

How has this influenced my creativity and planning

  • I need to think about the mise-en-scene as this helps create the setting
  • Lots of close ups to promote the new artist
