Research : Music Video Analysis 7 (P!nk - So What)

A close up of P!nk's arm shows a new tattoo she has to cover up her old one which says 'Tru Luv Carey', this is the name of her husband in real life. This shot suggests the narrative is going to be about hurt. The colour red symbolises anger which supports this. This shot is concept based as this shows how P!nk may behave and her attitude.

Dyer's theory of 'a stars an image' can be applied here, as P!nk rides a lawnmower on a motorway, this isn't something she'd do in real life and was created to gain attention by the audience.

P!nk sings 'lost my husband' and her actual husbands hands are over her eyes, this follows Goodwins conventions as the lyrics and visuals match.

Goodwins conventions of lyrics and visuals having a relationship is followed here again, as when she sings 'I want to start a fight' P!nk will begin a fight with someone.

The names Alecia and Carey are engraved onto the tree, Alecia is P!nk's real name. A close up and pull focus is used here to gain the audiecnes attention to the tree.

Goodwins conventions are adhered here as there are many close ups of pink throughout the music video. In addition, P!nk sings into camera which is a common convention of a music video. Furthermore, direct address is used as this engages with the audience. A high angle shot is used to show how superior P!nk is at this moment in time.

A long shot is used here to show both P!nk and the car next to her. Irony is used here as P!nk is going through a break up and a married couple are next to her. Strauss's binary opposition is challenged as P!nk wears black which connotes to evil, however she does not resemble this.

The newly weds faces are framed by the markings on the window. The marking are pink, this symbolises romance and love.

A long shot is used here to show P!nk's whole body and to show the mass amount of paparazzi. Mulvey's 'male gaze' theory can certainly be applied here as Pink is naked, this gains the attention from a male audience.

Verisimilitude and mise-en-scene are created through the use of props and the setting. The jewellery box and the clothes rail support this as without these the scene wouldn't appear real.

A pun has been used in the headline 'Hart' as she has caused her partner Carey Hart a heart break. Goodwin's conventions of intertextuality is followed as this are real headlines about there relationship.

Performance shots are used in this music video to show P!nk as an artist. The colours used in the background and for the smoke are pink which relate to her stage name.

Here Mulvey's theory can be applied as P!nk is wearing minimal clothing which attracts male attention.

CGI (computer generated imagery) is used here to create the newspaper background. The newspaper headline says 'SO WHAT!' which refers to the song name and can also refer to her attitude, therefore creating a concept.

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • Could consider using framing for my artist
  • Following Goodwin's conventions with visuals and lyrics matching
