Research : Institutions 4 (Spotify)

Image result for spotify

Spotify is a music, podcast, and video streaming service. You can download an app, therefore this is accessible from anywhere. Users can pay a subscription of £10 a month to listen without streaming. However if you are a student you get a £5 discount.

They have a large amount of subscribers who pay, this means that the services they give are worth the money. Spotify is good because they still give users an experience similar to the paying customers, this appeals to university students or anyone with a low income, therefore being an ideal place to launch a star.

As they have a large selection of songs this means that they cater to a range of audiences due to having so many genres.

Spotify offers a genre and mood section this allows the listeners to select the type of music that they desire. Moods that are offered like 'focus' can be used whilst studying, therefore this section would increase their following.

This section allows users to listen to similar music what they may not have heard before. This can often feature lesser known artists, therefore helping launch a star.

Music is available to a large number of countries, therefore targeting a wider range of people.

This statistic shows that nearly three quarters of Spotify listeners are younger. This would be the ideal platform for us to launch our star.

Overall Spotify would be perfect for us to launch a star because it targets our audience. The amount of users they have is significantly high this would be ideal as we know that our genre will be liked.

Planning : Meeting With Our Actors

We sat and discussed with our actress Emily Woolin over lunch about the costumes, makeup, hair styles and locations. We asked her if she would agree to wearing quite provocative clothing as this would appeal to males (Mulvey), she agreed to do this. The makeup style we were going to use was natural looking, Emily said that she would apply her makeup as well as using her own makeup. We will provide red lipstick as this also links to Mulveys theory as well as Strauss's. We asked for her to have quite natural looking hair which she said she was happy to do. We said that we would take her to the locations and will soon organise days for filming.

Research : Harry Houdini

Related image
Harry Houdini was an illusionist, escapologist and stunt performer. Houdini was born in Hungry, Budapest 1874 and moved to the America in 1878 with his mother and fur brothers. Harry Houdinis real name was Erik Weisz but changed his name to Harry Houdini after he became a professional magician. He named himself Harry Houdini after the french magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. His first name was in homage to Harry Kellar who he also admired. Houdini challenged the local police when he was on tour to restrain him with shackles and lock him in their prisons. In many of these challenge escapes, he was first stripped nude and searchedHoudini then became known as "The Handcuff King." Due to Houdini specialising in escapism we will use a symbol such as handcuffs to resemble how young children nowadays want to escape from where they are to a better place.

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • The idea of escapism and illusion has influenced our shots and the meaning of the music video

Planning Group Post : Beat Script

The general concept of our music video is romanticising nostalgia. Instead of being a stereotypical narrative, this video will be exploring the concept of utopia and how the modern day life is dissatisfying to young people.
Intertextuality will be referenced by mentioning The Wizard of Oz as some of the lyrics refer to Dorothy and yellow bricks being the yellow brick road.
The video will involve the singer just as much as the actress, as they both hold similar significance within the music video.
The actors will express their dissatisfaction with the modern day life through symbolism and through facial expressions/acting and body language.
The video will begin with opening credits and the title slide of the song. The colour yellow will be implied throughout the video in small aspects as this is the symbol of intertextuality.
Whenever the star image will be shown in the music video, a large amount of the shots will be closeups/ medium closeups as this displays the star to the audience and helps build a relationship between the audience and the rising star.

In conclusion

I found through my research that our target audience would like a grungy appearance, as they have all suggested that we should take photographs of old buildings and desolate areas, as this appeals to them. The audience has said that our actors suit the genre of the music video, therefore this has secured our actors and we now know we can use them. The audience has suggested we include a few more shots as this would 'create more contrast', we will take the shots suggested into consideration when annotating our lyrics. Many have suggested that we use black and white or sepia shots in the music video, we may consider doing this.

Research : Indie Codes and Conventions

Indie Codes and Conventions from RheanonGreenASMedia

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • I now know the codes and conventions for the indie genre and can now choose whether to break or adhere to some.
  • The settings has influenced me to pick places I will be able to access as this will adhere to conventions.
  • This has helped me be able to plan our locations, costumes, shots... as we know what we need to adhere to.
  • By knowing what colours of clothing Indie use, i will know consider the clothing choices for our actors.

Planning : Conclusion of Research (Music Videos)

Planning : Conclusion of Research (Digipak)

Research : Mood Board 3 - Locations

These are all locations in indie music videos that are possible for our group to replicate. All of these shots link to conventions of indie, as they are all low budget and fairly simple shots. These can be easily copied as we could access these places therefore adhering to indie conventions. The lighting tends to be fairly dark as this reflects the atmosphere and emotion. The mise-en-scene is usually quite minimal as the attention is aimed at the actor/artist/band.

Research : Digipak 6

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • Text should contrast with background to stand out to audience
  • Use artists name on all panels

Research : Music Video Analysis 9 - Closing Shots for Indie

Many of these closing shots are similar as they feature a member of the band or artist. The locations are very minimal as they are either a stage or a road.

  • I will use synergy throughout to connect all of my panels and advert
  • I need to create a colour scheme which represents my artist

Two Door Cinema Club Digipak from RheanonGreenASMedia

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • I will take into consideration that the colour of the text and the background should be different to stand out
  • Feature the barcode on the back as this is a common convention
  • Place the logo on front cover, cd and tracklist

Research : Digipak 2 (Indie)

How has this research influenced my creativity and planning?

  • I will take into consideration the minimalist panels as this quite common for Indie
  • Synergy is needed to link the advert and the digipak

Planning : Actors and a Star Image

Our actors in the music video will be our friends, Myles Chapman and Emily Woolin, this is because they both have experience of performing in shows. Furthermore, because they are our friends they don't mind acting in front of us. Both of these actors would be willing to dress up in outfits for us to create a star image. Furthermore, they'd sing into camera, as we are friends with them they are more open to this. They would both be extremely convincing due to the experience in acting. Both actors have the appearance that we were looking for as they both dress quite alternative and Emily uses a makeup style similar to what we are planning (natural). Furthermore, due to them having clothing suiting the genre this will help us in the pre-production phase as we can use some of their clothing.
